Pharaoh's decree to throw Jewish babies into the Nile on multiple levels, including the spiritual level of inducing the Jews to depend on the Nile rather than on G-d. The deeper slavery was one of consciousness: making the Jewish people perceive natural forces rather than G-d as the source of their sustenance.
