Ultimate Freedom From Pharaoh

Tzav | Leviticus | 5748

This discourse was delivered by the Rebbe on Shabbat Parshat Tzav, 5748 (1988). The custom on the Shabbat before Pesach to recite 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt' is explored through the Chassidic insight that the Hebrew word Pharaoh forms an anagram of 'ha-oreph', the back of the neck. When a person's inner divine Will is concealed, that concealment is a spiritual Pharaoh within; removing it is true freedom and the inner meaning of the Exodus.
